We use industry-standard terms every day. Here’s what they mean so you can choose the right services for your business.
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
Phone calls over the internet instead of the old copper phone network. You can use a desk phone, a softphone on your laptop, or an app on your mobile. Secure.tel uses Telnyx to provide reliable, encrypted VoIP so your calls stay private and compliant.
Why it matters: One system for voice and data, often lower cost, and easier to scale for teams.
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
The standard “language” that many VoIP systems use to set up and control calls. SIP trunking means we connect your business to the phone network over the internet via Telnyx—so you get real phone numbers and professional call quality without traditional phone lines.
Why it matters: Lets you use your own handsets or apps with our network; you’re not locked into one vendor.
PBX (Private Branch Exchange)
Your company’s internal phone system: call routing, queues, voicemail, and extensions. A digital or cloud PBX runs in the cloud (we use Telnyx for the underlying voice and SIP), so you don’t need hardware in the office.
Why it matters: One main number, multiple extensions, hold music, and professional call handling for teams.
SMS & MMS (messaging)
SMS = text messages; MMS = picture/group messages. We use Telnyx for programmable messaging so you can send and receive business texts from a proper phone number, with opt-in/opt-out and compliance in mind.
Why it matters: Notifications, reminders, and two-way conversations with clients without using a personal mobile.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A secure tunnel between your device and the internet. Your traffic is encrypted so others can’t see what you’re doing; it can also appear to come from a different location. We offer a privacy VPN for legal, medical and financial teams who need an extra layer when working remotely.
Why it matters: Safer use of public Wi‑Fi and clearer separation between work and personal traffic.
eSIM (embedded SIM)
A digital SIM that you download to your phone instead of inserting a physical card. Burner or short‑term eSIMs give you a separate data (and sometimes voice) line for a project or trip, so you don’t use your main number.
Why it matters: Useful for investigations, travel, or roles where you want a clean line you can retire when done.
